Adventurer's League Season 4 (Part 2)

DDAL 4-3 The Executioner

All right Game Fans, Season 4 of Adventurer’s League (The Curse of Strahd Story Arc) carries on with DDAL 4-3, The Executioner.  An ancient relic is rumored to have been discovered nearby.  Treasure hunters and fortune seekers alike are racing towards this treasure, can you afford to be the last ones to reach the relic?

DDAL 4-3 is designed for 1st thru 4th  level characters, with an average party size of 5 suggested.  For Adventurer’s League play, the level range is a hard ceiling, and characters of 5th level or higher are not playable in this adventure.  This adventure is built in 3 parts.  It should take about 2 hours start to finish.  Remember to bring your D & D Survival Kit with you when you show up to game. (This adventure is optimized for 3rd level characters, so plan accordingly)

Part 1: Murmurs

The adventure starts with the characters at the Seven Tables Inn avoiding the worst part of the storm.  There are rumors going around the town about newcomers, including a mysterious man named Arik Lavus.  The winter is settling in and things are starting to look grim for the town.  There are plots afoot, and there are rumors to hook the players into investigating a little deeper into what’s going on.

Part 2:  Secrets

Following the various leads they found in the Seven Tables, the characters are off to “investigate” a few sites around town.  The characters will need to explore a couple of different areas in order to put the pieces together.  The characters have a bit more investigation to perform in town before all hell breaks loose.  There are a few areas in this section that are reminiscent of a traditional dungeon crawl, so if you are completely new to D & D, take your time and explore and investigate things that stick out.

Part 3: Apprehension

The characters have an opportunity to oppose the villain of this story and be heroic in the same breath.  Undead attack the village and the characters have a difficult decision ahead of them.  However the characters choose to handle this situation is up to them, but the aftermath of this attack will also require the characters to interact with a local noble who may or may not be sympathetic to their plight.  Once that has been handled, the adventure is over and the characters have time to rest and level up (if applicable).

Aftermath:

So as a character in the adventurer’s league, you have three primary rewards you’re aiming for, and the occasional extra bit of stuff.  Let’s go over your Downtime Days, your Experience Points, Your Gold Pieces, and your renown.    If you’re not playing in an Adventurer’s League group, you don’t need to track these on your log sheet, but keep an eye on your numbers.

·         Experience Points:  Completing this adventure will net your character between 225 and 300 experience points.  If you’re playing this after DDAL 4-2, you’ll have between 825 and 1,100 experience points.  You’re probably a level 2 character knocking on the door of level 3, if you haven’t gotten there.

·         Gold Pieces:  This one’s a little trickier, because GP is calculated based off of the number of players at a table.  There’s enough treasure available that you should certainly be able to pick up some extra supplies or replace ones that you expended during the adventure.  Keep an eye out for any handy magical items that may show up.

·         Downtime Days:  This one’s easy.  Everyone gets 5 downtime days for playing through this adventure.  You should end up with 35 downtime days if you played DDAL 4-2 before this adventure.

·         Renown:  Each character is going to get one point of renown.

Story Award:  Everyone who completes this adventure gains the Demiplane of Dread story award if they don’t already have it.  There is a way to pick up another story award along the way, but that depends on what the characters end up doing.

So now that you’ve completed The Executioner, check your character, level up if you need to, pick up additional gear and get ready for the next adventure.

DDAL 4-4 The Marionette

Season 4 of the Adventurer’s League continues the Curse of Strahd story arc and picks up with The Marionette.  The story that began with The Executioner continues, and the characters must deal with a fortune teller, an army of undead, and the ambitions of a nobleman.  Things are about to get a lot more interesting around Orasnou....

DDAL 4-4 is designed for 1st thru 4th  level characters, with an average party size of 5 suggested.  For Adventurer’s League play, the level range is a hard ceiling, and characters of 5th level or higher are not playable in this adventure.  This adventure is built in 4 parts.  It should take about 4 hours start to finish.  Remember to bring your D & D Survival Kit with you when you show up to game.

Part 1: Easy Money

The adventure starts with the characters in the Seven Tables Inn.  Rumors are circulating through the Inn, as normal.  The characters have the opportunity to pick up a side job looking for some townsfolk who’ve visited a neighboring town looking for supplies.  The characters have nothing better to do in town and this let’s them earn a little coin and stretch their legs.  The townsfolk who went out have run into a bit of trouble, and the characters are going to have to put in some adventuring work to return them safely.

Part 2:  The Reading

After their excursion in adventuring, the characters are summoned to the Burgomeister’s home. The characters have the opportunity to witness a  Vistani fortune telling ceremony and can learn a great deal about what’s been going on around them and the larger town.  This can be a very harrowing experience for the characters, but will be extremely helpful to them in the long run.

Part 3: Lazlo’s Attack

The reading is ended prematurely by an attack from the wight creature that they have been attempting to deal with in the adventure before this.  The characters have enough time to deal with one of the four potential crises.  This is a hard choice situation and quick thought and action are essential for preserving as much of the town as possible.  Once the characters have managed to deal with one of the problems, more bad news hits.

Part 3: The Manor

The characters will have to enter a haunted mansion to rescue one of the locals.   This is a very complicated area full of haunting effects, ghostly things, and other ideas to scare the pants off of the characters.  Not all of the ghosts are hostile, and the characters will see things they’ve experienced during the visions at the Burgomeister’s house.  This can be looked at as a dungeon crawl, but the haunted trappings make it a considerably more interesting (and potentially dangerous) area to explore.  Pay attention to what you’re doing.  Once the characters have dealt with the area and returned to Orasnou the adventure ends.

·         Experience Points:  Completing this adventure will net your character between 900 and 1,200 experience points.  If you’re playing this after DDAL 4-3, you’ll have between 1,725 and 2,500 experience points.  Either way, you’ve got a 3rd level character and could be closing in on level 4 fast.
·         Gold Pieces:  This ones’ a little trickier, because GP is calculated based off of the number of players at a table.  There’s enough treasure available that you should certainly be able to pick up some extra supplies or replace ones that you expended during the adventure.  Keep an eye out for any handy magical items that may show up.
·         Downtime Days:  This one’s easy.  Everyone gets 10 downtime days for playing through this adventure.  You should end up with 45 downtime days if you played DDAL 4-3 before this adventure.
·         Renown:  Each character is going to get one point of renown.  An additional point of Renown is possible, depending on what the characters do.
Story Award:  Everyone who completes this adventure gains the Demiplane of Dread story award if they don’t already have it.  There are other story awards along the way, but that depends on what the characters end up doing.

So now that you’ve completed The Marionette, check your character, level up if you need to, pick up additional gear and get ready for the next adventure.

And those are the next two adventures in Season 4.  We’ll be back next week to take a gander at the next two adventures on the lower level track.  For those playing along at home, that’s The Seer (DDAL 4-5) and The Ghost (DDAL 4-6).  Game on, Game Fans.
