Fiction Review: Fox Tales (part 2)
Hey Folks, quick hits today, we're looking at Fox Tales by Bryan Young. We're covering the next two stories The Fox and the Bear and A Fox on Galatea this week. (Next week we'll cover the next two stories). Note: These were originally entries in Shrapnel, and have been collected for the reader.
The Fox and the Bear
The Foxes are back and finally off world for the first time. Traveling to the Dominion world of Kaesong on a gig. Protecting a town from marauding bandits as big time Mercenaries, they are living the dream. How quickly that dream turns to nightmare when the real world crashes down on them
Desperate struggle for survival dominates this Tale as the Foxes go hunting a bear. There's a twist here that reminds us all to read contracts closely.
I enjoyed this, the mech fight was fun, and it wasn't the usual set piece. It's well paced and terrifying in a couple of spots.
(Rating will wait until the end of the Anthology).
A Fox on Galatea
The fourth in our anthology is the first time we see the Foxes outside a deployment. Getting to see Galatea through the eyes of a fan girl is a refreshing change from the too cool for school mercs that usually are the focus of fiction. The characters are enjoyable, the action is delightfully paced and it feels like it really chews the scenery.
We'll be back next week to cover Fox Hunt. You can pick up the Anthology at your preferred book vendor of choice. Buy locally if you can.
