All right Game Fans, we’re continuing with our look at the 3rd season of the Adventurer’s League for Dungeons and Dragons, 5th edition. Like last season, we’re not going to take these adventures in numeric order, but we’ve split them up into two different tracks based off of their suggested character level. Today we’re looking at the first two adventures for the mid level track, DDEX 3-11 The Quest for Sporedome and DDEX 3-13 Writhing in the Dark. Let’s dive in, and take a closer look at the next part of Season 3.
DDEX 3-11 The Quest for Sporedome
All right Game Fans, Season 3 of Adventurer’s League (The Rage of Demons Story Arc) continues with DDEX 3-11, The Quest for Sporedome. Rumors of a lost colony of Myconoids reach the surface. The rumors say that the mushroom folk have developed a cure for the madness that’s engulfing the rest of the world. Perhaps they can develop an antidote as well?
Like most of the tier 2 adventures, DDEX 3-8 is designed for 5th thru 10th level characters, with an average party size of 5 suggested. For Adventurer’s League play, the level range is a hard ceiling, and characters below 5th level or higher than 10th are not playable in this adventure. This specific adventure is to run in three parts, and should take around 2 hours to complete from start to finish. Remember to bring your D & D Survival Kit with you when you show up to game. If you’re running this adventure, make sure you read up on the faezress and the effects it has on people (Page 8) and check out the Madness sidebar on page 7.
Part 1: Sporedome
The Adventure begins with the characters entering the Sporedome region. It’s a massive underground cavern that’s full of interesting creatures and things to encounter. There are some native denizens that are fully enraptured with madness and will have to be dealt with in order to navigate deeper into the area. There are a lot of clues for a party looking for them, and there’s clearly something going on that doesn’t make sense.
Part 2: Agaricus’s Colony
The second part of this adventure is primarily a social encounter. Now the fact that social encounter is with mushroom men engaged in a life and death struggle for the control of their region is just part of the fun. The Myconoids need a little bit of help sorting out a situation, and the characters can earn a lot of goodwill by helping them with their crisis. It will require a little bit of backtracking and some rescuing, but the characters can make some friends with the strange mushroom people.
Part 3: Doomspore Dell
Now this part of the adventure requires a little bit of work to get on track, because the principal villain of this area shouldn’t technically be here. They were captured by the Myconoids in the 2nd part, and there’s no mention of freeing the principal anywhere between point b and c. My suggestion is that the creature is released from jail after being proven innocent by the actions of the characters, or it escapes in the confusion. The characters have two primary ways to interact with the critter, and either way can help them find the thing they were sent on the quest to find. Either way they choose to handle their business, the return to the surface world signals the end of this adventure.
Aftermath:
So as a character in the adventurer’s league, you have three primary rewards you’re aiming for, and the occasional extra bit of stuff. Let’s go over your Downtime Days, your Experience Points, Your Gold Pieces, and your renown. If you’re not playing in an Adventurer’s League group, you don’t need to track these on your log sheet, but keep an eye on your numbers.
· Experience Points: Completing this adventure will net your character between 2,250 and 3,000 experience points. If you’re playing with a fresh 5th level character, this should put you at somewhere between 8,750 and 9,500 experience points. Your character is still level five, but you’re about halfway to level 6. If this isn’t your first Tier 2 adventure, then you could have any number of experience points.
· Gold Pieces: This one’s a little trickier, because GP is calculated based off of the number of players at a table. There’s enough treasure available that you should certainly be able to pick up some extra supplies or replace ones that you expended during the adventure. Keep an eye out for any handy magical items that may show up.
· Downtime Days: This one’s easy. Everyone gets 5 downtime days for playing through this adventure. Make sure you add this to your total from previous adventures.
· Renown: Every Character earns a point of renown.
Story Awards: There are two Story Awards that are possible through this adventure, and if you earn one of those (or both) then make sure you write them down on your log.
So now that you’ve completed The Quest for Sporedome, check your character, level up if you need to, pick up additional gear and get ready for the next adventure.
DDEX 3-13 Writhing in the Dark
Season 3 of the Adventurer’s League continues the Rage of Demons story arc and carries on with Writhing in the Dark. Recent efforts start to pay dividends, and the Sporedome offers up a mysterious ally in the struggle against the fire giants and their allies. There’s a catch of course, but it’s something that brave adventurers shouldn’t have a problem with, right?
DDEX 3-13 is designed for 5th thru 10th level characters, with an average party size of 5 suggested. For Adventurer’s League play, the level range is a hard ceiling, and characters below 5th level or higher than 10th are not playable in this adventure. This adventure is built to run in 3 parts. It should take about 2 hours start to finish. Remember to bring your D & D Survival Kit with you when you show up to game.
Part 1: Volunteer, Volun-TOLD
The characters have been sent to Sporedome to make contact with a potential ally. Their new ally, Glor, has a request to make and is willing to lend considerable aid to the characters if they can help it with a little problem. The characters are going to have to chase down a wayward colleague of Glor’s, but doing so will engender a great deal of support and friendship between the various groups in the Underdark to defeat the Giants that are currently holding the city of Maerimydra.
Part 2: The Brainbucket
The characters navigate through the underdark to the lair of a creature known as Rogue Thought. Glor has asked the characters to deal with him and return to Sporedome. This area is full of puzzles, curiosities, horrid abominations, and an old friend or two. The characters will have to work quickly and intelligently to make their way through this area and find their quarry.
Part 3: Driven by Passion
Rogue Thought awaits the characters in his inner sanctum. He is quite mad, but he is still a genius. The success of this alliance rests on the ability of the characters to put Rogue Thought down and bring proof back to Glor. Success gives the characters and their allies in the world a better chance of dealing with the threat in the underdark. Failure results in an unpleasant death.

· Renown: Each character is going to get one point of renown. Order of the Gauntlet Faction members have the opportunity to complete a special assignment during this adventure, but they have to be at least rank 2 to qualify.
So now that you’ve completed Writhing in the DArk, check your character, level up if you need to, pick up additional gear and get ready for the next adventure.
And those are the next two adventures in Season 3. We’ll be back next week to take a gander at the next two adventures in the mid level track. For those playing along at home, that’s Szith Morcane Unbound (DDEX 3-15) and Assault on Maerimydra (DDEX 3-16). Game on, Game Fans.
