Product Review: BattleTech Universe

Hey Folks, quick hit today. We know the holidays are rapidly approaching (and we love every holiday and excuse to hand out presents), so we're going to spend some time covering things we think are great for the Battletech Fan in your life. However, through the power of Uno Reverse, we're actually gonna start with a great introduction to the BattleTech setting itself with BattleTech Universe.

What is this?

BattleTech is a massive interconnected setting with 40 years of novels, Miniatures, computer games, art and rules. It's huge. That size can make it very complicated for a new fan to jump in, and BattleTech Universe is an attempt to build an on ramp into the super highway that is BattleTech. By offering bits of information across a massive range of topics, Universe teases the imagination and provides starting places for a host of topics.

What does that actually mean?

Universe covers the fictional history of the BattleTech setting from the points it diverged from our history and goes up to the precipice of the Ilclan Era. Featuring major events, wars, technological innovations and the polities of these eras with information and gorgeous art, Universe is a giant appetizer platter for BattleTech.

Who's this book for?

This book, in my estimate, is really for two key groups of people. The first group of people are BattleTech Fans who are trying to actively recruit new folks into the setting. The summaries are easy to read and this is the perfect book to hand to a friend who is curious about BattleTech but doesn't have a starting point. Hand them the book, and let them ask questions.

The second group are people who are trying to discover BattleTech but don't know where to start. The book gives you enough background to catch on to the Jargon of BattleTech and things to do more research on in order to go deeper.

The book is also very, very pretty. The Art team was on point and splash the book with a lot of truly great work to draw out the imagination.

The book doesn't feature any game rules or materials, but this book is not for that. BattleTech has lots of rules entries to get you in, but this is the best resource I've seen for getting a new fan into the setting. I wish other fandoms had similar books.

Overall Rating: 5 stars.
