Hey Folks, we're going to take a brief look at the changes from Hinterlands to Draconis Reach. The chaos Campaign has changed iBetween books and I think they're for the better in most cases. Let's dig into it.
Regular Military Commands
Regular Mercenary Commands have construction rules very similar to the Mercenaries featured elsewhere in the Draconis Reach book. This is a balancing mechanism and it streamlines the play experience for everyone. It also allows the regulars players to experience a lot of the ups and downs of the campaigns like their. Mercenary companions.
Scale Limits
The unit count limits were added to the scales themselves, making it easy to refer back to them. Contract also adds scale Limits for Unit counts as well as BV/PV for ease of reference.
Contract Negotiation
A cap has been added to how much an individual contract term can be modified. The rationale behind this change being that employers can only bend so far during negotiations.
Contract Steps
The negotiable terms (steps) of a contract were modified to stretch the steps out on both Base Pay and Support Terms. This will give a little bit more wiggle room for the players during the negotiation phase.
Reputation
Reputation is now per contract. It's not zero sum, making it harder to lose. While it means that intentional acts of crime and piracy still cause reputation damage, failing a contract is no longer a death sentence.
Tracks
The track system has been reworked for clarity and/or balance. Assets can also be much more useful in completing objectives.
Track Orders
Order objectives establish a baseline minimum. Not completing any objectives results in less pay for the track. (Try your best)
Battlefield Loss
The support rights term covers the replacement cost of a destroyed unit rather than the purchase price of a new unit (a minor distinction, but relevant for the campaign).
Named Pilots
An exhaustive reworking of the system that's in line with the Scouring Sands rules (which is a choice i support). The new Named pilots system encourages players to customize their crew and the edge abilities are interesting. You can find a full writeup down below in our blog.
Temporary Pilots
They're easier to hire, but the discount for making them permanent additions was removed.
Those are the primary changes from Hinterlands (which you'll find on page 18 when Draconis Reach drops on the 13th of May). Check back next week for more coverage.
