Hey Folks, surprise, bonus article this week. Today I'm sharing something interesting i found on Kickstarter that has a lot of potential for the Wargaming crowd. Today we're looking at Rift Zone: Contact by Boosted Reality. Let's dig into this and then I'll link you to the Kickstarter in progress for you to go see what you think.
What is this?
Rift Zone: Contact is a tabletop miniature war game that uses an augmented reality component to bring the experience to life.
What is Augmented Reality?
This is a tabletop game that uses an app to enhance and expand on the game experience. In this case, it uses AR to provide music (cues for turn sequences, moving from step to step in the turn, battle music, and even victory music), show possible movement and combat options, and even track your game play from game to game.
What's it look like?
The starter set features Humans vs non humanoid scifi aliens, as seen below.
Can I paint my minis?
Yes you can. They come in standard plastic, (i have not seen what they look like fresh out of the box, so i don't know how much clean up will be involved), and are paintable using your favorite materials at your leisure.
What's this cost?
Check the Kickstarter campaign featured here for all the details on prices and expansions.
What do I think?
I think Aigmenred Reality games are the next frontier of Wargaming, and I am pleased by what I hear from the developers. The AR platform takes the paperwork and “fiddly bits” that slow down a game and integrates them into a seamless experience. At least according to them. I'm also very curious how this increases accessibility in wargaming.
My rating
Definitely a 5 star concept. I haven't seen enough of it up close to see how close implementation matches up to concept, but if you like cutting edge tech getting mixed up in your wargames, Check this one out.
As stated above, check out their campaign here on Kickstarter.
