Product Review: Force Pack Legendary mechwarriors 2

Hey Folks, we’re back with another product review. Today, my friends, we have the Legendary Mechwarriors II box. Originally Exclusive to the Kickstarter, it’s exclusivity window has ended and you should be able to find it on the CGL web store or maybe your FLGS. Let’s Break It Down.

Contents

4 Plastic Mechs! (Note, that like all of CGL’s boxed releases, these come fully assembled and ready to play right out of the box). You get a Marauder, a Devastator,a Caesar, and a Charger . All four are variants of mechs from the general Mercenaries release. I’ve taken a bunch of pictures of these. Our camera setup remains questionable.

1 plastic tank. The SM-1 Tank Destroyer. Unlike the other Miniatures in this box, the SM is unique to this force pack.

5 Alpha Strike Cards (Dual sided) that feature 5 special characters for this boxed set. Each has special abilities and mechanics.

5 Mechwarrior Pilot Cards that feature notable pilots of these machines.

Breakdown:

This box is a little weird compared to other force packs and haz two glaring deficits. First, each of the Alpha Strike cards is for a named mechwarrior, none of whom are in the same unit. Second, the box doesnt have generic cards for the mechs in the box meaning that out of the box, the only way to play them is as a group of named characters.

Are these deal breakers? No. You can grab generic cards off the Master Unit List and play with reckless abandon, but they fail the Christmas morning test of being easy to play out of the box.

Its a weird group of mechs, as an aside. This variant of the Charger is the upgunned xl engine version. The Marauder and Devastator do both of their normal jobs and the Caesar is a solid heavy. The tank destroyer, despite being unique to this box doesn't add a lot of power on its own.

These designs are firmly in the clan invasion era, except for the sake. They can be utilized in later eras, but you will need to grab Alpha strike cards off the Master Unit List for non character versions.

AS Point Cost (in the box) 359 for all the special characters in the box.

You can always check the Master Unit List for other versions of these four designs and that can dramatically affect the point values. Note: this is the most point intensive box to date, but none of these special characters are in the same unit.

Battle Value isn’t calculated for these boxes, and i would suggest you use the Master Unit List to identify what the BV of your force (and specific variations) is.

Thoughts: Production on these mechs looks pretty good. There’s a little bit of flashing to clear out if you’re going to make these showcases, but it’s fairly easy to clear. None of the barrels seem bent, and you’re going to have an easy time getting these ready.

Overall Rating:

2.5 stars.

This is a lot of Mech in the box. However, the lack of generic versions of the cards means that out of the box, you realistically can't play this aa a coherent unit. This box is best used to supplement the person building one of the specific units covered by these characters. That's the primary thing keeping this from getting a higher rating.

Currently, it’s priced at $39.99, on the Catalyst Game Labs Store.
